Axewomen eliminated from post season play

WOLFVILLE, NS - A 3-2 loss to the StFX X-women eliminated any chance for the Acadia Axewomen volleyball team to slip into next weekend's AUS women's volleyball tournament hosted by Moncton. The Axewomen needed the win to move within two points of Memorial but failed to gain ground.

The StFX win improves the X-Women to 8-9 and sits fourth overall in the AUS standings with only one game remaining in the season which has Moncton scheduled against Memorial in Newfoundland tomorrow afternoon.

Through the first set, neither team took more than a two point lead until a kill by Acadia's Alyssa Berry pushed the Axewomen out to a 18-15 lead that was stretched to four by a StFX attack error. Acadia would take the first set 25-21 off of Berry's fifth kill of the first game.

The pendulum swung to the X-Women in the second of five sets with StFX taking the lead from start to finish, pulling off a 25-17 second game win with fourth year outside hitter Katherine Ryan posting six second set kills.

StFX would take a 2-1 lead on a 25-20 third set victory. After pulling out to a 14-7 StFX advantage, Acadia would fight back to bring the game to 19-18 but StFX, led by Ryan, would prevail.

The Axewomen grabbed the fourth set 25-19 after taking over the lead at five. Pushing the score to 19-12, Acadia would hold onto the cushion in the closing of the fourth to send the match into a fifth and final game.

Taking an early 4-0 lead, Acadia would be passed following a tie at six. Acadia's five attack errors and two service errors in the closing of the final set game handed StFX the 15-12 win and 3-2 match win.

StFX's Katherin Ryan was named the Subway Player of the game with 17 kills, while teammate Catherine Thorton posted a game high 19 kills and an outstanding 0.327 hitting percentage.

Three Axewomen posted double digit kills including Alyssa Berry, Nicole Davidson and Meg Rector with 15, 13 and 13 respectively.

The Axewomen graduate six players this season including Pam Giordani, Nicole Davidson, Alyssa Berry, Alana Murphy, Sarah Naugler and Deanna Schaper-Kotter.
Axewomen and Sea-Hawks split weekend

WOLFVILLE, NS - The Acadia volleyball team took one step forward and one step back in their travel for post season play. Grabbing the first of two matches this weekend against the Memorial Sea-Hawks - 3-2 in Saturday's match-up, the Axewomen allowed Memorial to win the second, fourth and final sets to take a 3-2 win in the weekend's second and final match.

Head Coach Joffre Ribout was happy and cautious with yesterday's win. "After a great start we were able to fight hard through the last four sets. Memorial came back and pushed us from the brink but we were able to battle back from our mistakes and their tough play to get the win".

The story was similar today but this time the Axewomen were on the losing end of a tight match.

Taking the lead for the entire first set, Acadia captured a convincing 25-19 win with each of the starting hitters posting a kill and Alyssa Berry leading with three.

Out to quick 8-3 lead, the Axewomen eventually loss control when Sea-Hawk Chantel Jones recorded two kils to give Memorial a 22-19 lead that turned into a 25-21 win to tie the match at one.

A neck and neck battle followed in set three where only a maximum of three points separated the teams throughout the game. The set was decided on an attack error, giving Acadia a 28-26 win and 2-1 lead heading into the fourth game.

With a 16-9 lead, the Sea-Hawks were only challenged in the later stage of the fourth set when the Axewomen blessed with several Memorial attack errors and a timely service aces by Alyssa Berry and a Kristen Bolduc kill that brought the Axewomen to within five points. The Sea-Hawks would take the fourth set 25-19 and push the fifth and final set to 17.

Players of the game this past weekend include Saturday's Subway Player of the Game Meg Rector and today's Sea-Hawk Chantel Jones.

Jones psoted an impressive 0.344 hitting percentage and match high 16 kills while Axewoman Nicole Davidson added 14 kills to Acadia's 47. Teammate Kristen Bolduc added 11. Memorial's Erin Bursey and Sam March had 14 and 15 kills respectively and setter Beth Forsey had 55 sets on the team's 60 kills.

The Axewomen slip from fourth to sixth in the standings with a 5-9 record and 10 points, while Memorial edges forward with 12 points and in fourth place. The StFX X-Women's win against UNB today pushes the X-Women ahead of Acadia into fifth. Acadia has three games remaining that include StFX and Cape Breton next weekend and wrapping up the regular season at home versus StFX on Sat. Feb. 11.

Axewomen back on track with 3-0 sweep of UNB

WOLFVILLE, NS - The Axewomen volleyball team got back on track with a 3-0 sweep of the UNB Varsity Reds. Improving to 3-7 and tied with Moncton for sixth place in the AUS standings and the last playoff spot, Acadia delivered a solid first set, blasting off to an early 10-1 lead.

An aggressive start to the first set positioned the Axewomen to take a commanding 20-6 lead in the closing minute, grabbing a 25-10 first set victory. Hitters Alana Murphy, Alyssa Berry and Kristin Bolduc each posted 2 kills each in the opening game.

A tighter second set followed with the Varsity Reds grabbing their first lead of the match on a Vanja Mitrovic kill that setup a 8-7 lead. UNB lost their lead at 13-12 when a kill by Nicole Davidson pushed the Axewomen into a lead that would not be matched by the V-Reds until a 22-22 tie created by an Alana Murphy attack error. Murphy would make up for the error with Acadia points off of a Murphy kill. A Nicole Davidson service ace and a block by Meg Rector solidified the 25-22 second game win.

With the third and eventual final set tied at 20, UNB edged forward, setting up a 24-23 match point, but an important kill by Meg Rector pushed the game beyond 25. A back and forth battle, highlighted by kills on both sides, resulted in a service ace by Alana Murphy; kills by Kristin Bolduc and Nicole Davidson and a V-Red attack error, handed Acadia a 31-29 third set victory. Vanja Mitrovic led UNB with a game high 13 kills.

Acadia's Meg Rector led the Axewomen with an impressive 0.500 hitting percentage that included 7 kills while senior outside hitter Alana Murphy led Acadia with 10 kills. Nicole Davidson added 8 kills.

Head Coach Joffre Ribout was pleased with team effort. “The team had a great start in the first set and remained focused in a tighter second game. Falling behind in the final set, we were able to regain our focus and eventually closing down the UNB Lead. We stayed together in sets two and three and we hope this rubs off for our remaining games this season.
Axewomen drop to 3-7 with loss to Moncton

WOLFVILLE, NS - The Acadia Axewomen lost their first game of 2012 in a 3-1 match loss to the Moncton Aigles Bleus. The loss drops the Axewomen to 3-7, while Moncton improves to 3-7, creating a three-way tie for sixth place between Moncton, Acadia and Memorial.

The Axewomen played a strong first set that saw them take a commanding 14-5 lead. The Axewomen would hold onto their lead for the entire set, finishing the first game 25-17 in their favour. The Aigles Bleus, however, would go on to win three sets in a row to lock up their first win since their last meeting against the Axewomen on November 20th in Moncton, ending a three game losing streak.

The second set saw a close see-saw battle between the Axewomen and the Aigles Blues with the score in a constant deadlock until a 21-21 tie was broken by an Acadia attack error followed by an service ace by Moncton's Genevieve LeMay and a kill by Player of the Game Stephanie Lagace. The second set ended with a Moncton block by Lagace.

Behind 18-12 in the third set, Acadia made a strong effort to claw back from a six point deficit that saw them tying the game at 19. Despsite the Axewomen’s effort, Moncton would pull out a 25-21 win that started with a Lagace kill at 20-19.

The fourth and final set played out much like the second set, with a close see-saw battle being played out between the Axewomen and the Aigles Bleus. Unfortunately, the fourth set would indeed play out like the previous second set with Moncton taking the final frame 25-20.

The Axewomen out-hit Moncton 147 to 138 with a kill advantage of 51-43, but fell short on the score board giving up 25 attack errors along with nine service errors. Axewoman Kristen Bolduc had a hitting percentage of 0.421, while teammate and Acadia's Subway Player of the Game, senior outside hitter Alana Murphy had a game high 15 kills.

The Axewomen will take the weekend off as they prepare for a road game next Friday against the CIS #9 Dalhousie Tigers who will seek revenge for a 3-0 loss against Acadia before the Christmas Holidays. The Tigers' loss to Acadia on November 25, bumped Dalhousie off of the CIS Top Ten, but they resurfaced after the break . Dalhousie currently has a record of 7-2 and are second in the AUS standings.

Moncton returns home tonight to host the CIS #3 Saint Mary's Huskies who hold onto first place in the AUS standings with a 9-0 record.

Volleyball Season Preview

WOLFVILLE, NS - With a 1-17 record last season, the Axewomen look to make huge strides this year following a disappointing season in 2010-11.

This season Coach Joffre Ribout, entering his 10th season, considers his squad one of the most talented he has had in recent years. The only problem is that the rest of the conference has made great gains in becoming a National contender.

"We have the skill, and athletism, we just need to pull it all together and play consistently".

The team's well balanced attack this season and ability to spread the ball is led by fourth year transfer Lauren Carter. Carter, who played three seasons with the now defunct Laurier Golden Hawks, is an Ontario provincial team member and is now attending Acadia to complete her academic and athletic endeavours. In addition to Carter Acadia returns starters, Meg Rector, Kristen Bolduc, Alana, Murphy, Alyssa Berry, Nicole Davidson and 2nd team AUS All-Star Pam Giordani.

While blocking is one of the team's brightest spots, emphasis will be made on back row defense."We need to show more consistency and have better focus on back row defense to be successful this season", points out Ribout.

The loss of seniors Jessica Renshaw and Melanie McKinnon will be compensated by the addition of Lauren Carter, Bri Rector (sister of Meg) and Kristen Long.

Boasting a roster that is peppered with third and fourth year players, head coach Joffre Ribout is anxious for the season to begin after taking part in two tournaments thus far with mixed results.

"It will be a competitive season in the AUS with any team being able to win on any given night. WE have the talent to compete and enjoy a successful season but we have t work on remaining focused for longer periods of time so we can play more consistently".

The Axewomen began the regular season this past weekend in Halifax as they took part in an opening AUS tournament that had mixed results. Losing their opening game to StFX, the Axewomen beat CIS #4 ranked Saint Mary's in the first set and lost three in a row. In their last game of the weekend, the Axewomen posted a 3-0 win over Moncton.

Acadia will host Cape Breton this weekend on Sunday starting at 2pm.
